Gridlock in Atlanta
As most of you have seen Atlanta was totally shut down over the past 48 hours with 1,000’s of horror stories. People were stranded on the motorways, sleeping in cars, running out of gas, ending up in wrecks and abandoning their cars to walk home. It was a disaster to say the least.
Just as it began to snow I was out with a friend running an errand. As we headed home a young girl slid through a stop sign and broadsided our car. An hour later the police came – thankfully the damage was minimal and the car driveable. We got home an hour later going only 2 miles!
My wife, Teresa, was stuck for over 7 hours in the gridlock that took place when everybody left work at the same time. All it took was one vehicle spinning out and blocking the road to shut it all down. She ended up at a restaurant. Later that night I went out to get her – it took me three hours with many detours to get to her location and get her home. We were both stressed to the max but grateful to find our shelter in the storm. I would say we were one of the “blessed” ones.
My son-in-law, Matt, left his car on the side of the interstate after sitting for several hours with no movement. He ended up walking home. It was nine miles in loafers.
In the midst all the hardships there were also great acts of kindness and charity. Numerous people helped to push cars free. Others went out into their neighborhoods with water and food. People opened up their homes for children stranded on buses and one of my neighbors went out with his 4 wheel drive jeep and chain to pull cars out of ditches. He gave many people rides home and merrily offered himself freely late into the night.
I trust all of you were sheltered from the storm and remained safe and warm. I will be with you again this Sunday and trust the warming trend will melt the snow and make the roads passable. It’s been one heck of a week here in Atlanta!
