Gridlock in Atlanta

As most of you have seen Atlanta was totally shut down over the past 48 hours with 1,000’s of horror stories. People were stranded on the motorways, sleeping in cars, running out of gas, ending up in wrecks and abandoning their cars to walk home. It was a disaster to say the least.

Just as it began to snow I was out with a friend running an errand. As we headed home a young girl slid through a stop sign and broadsided our car. An hour later the police came – thankfully the damage was minimal and the car driveable. We got home an hour later going only 2 miles!

My wife, Teresa, was stuck for over 7 hours in the gridlock that took place when everybody left work at the same time. All it took was one vehicle spinning out and blocking the road to shut it all down. She ended up at a restaurant. Later that night I went out to get her – it took me three hours with many detours to get to her location and get her home. We were both stressed to the max but grateful to find our shelter in the storm. I would say we were one of the “blessed” ones.

My son-in-law, Matt, left his car on the side of the interstate after sitting for several hours with no movement. He ended up walking home. It was nine miles in loafers.

In the midst all the hardships there were also great acts of kindness and charity. Numerous people helped to push cars free. Others went out into their neighborhoods with water and food. People opened up their homes for children stranded on buses and one of my neighbors went out with his 4 wheel drive jeep and chain to pull cars out of ditches. He gave many people rides home and merrily offered himself freely late into the night.

I trust all of you were sheltered from the storm and remained safe and warm. I will be with you again this Sunday and trust the warming trend will melt the snow and make the roads passable. It’s been one heck of a week here in Atlanta!

God’s Peace,
Fr. Alan

Priest Blurb
The Rev. Alan Hansen

Greetings all,

I am going to be with you this Sunday and look forward to seeing everybody.  My recovery continues at a normal pace so I am “on track” for a full recovery.  Conservative estimates are about 3 to 6 months to get back to normal.

My plans are to start back slowly and to listen to my body.  I will be using a stool this Sunday and be seated for the sermon to rest the knee.  I may also have to use it at the altar during the consecration.  Hopefully in another 3 or 4 weeks my strength and stamina will increase.

I also plan on driving over once a week on Thursdays with the goal of being back fully engaged by the end of February.  You guys have been great and I deeply appreciate your prayers and patience!

See you Sunday –

God’s Peace,

Fr. Alan

Priest Blurb:

Greetings all,

I continue to make good progress in my recovery from a full knee replacement.  The injury occurred over 40 years ago and the joint finally gave out and had to be replaced.  I met with the surgeon last Thursday and got a very positive review so it’s now up to me to diligently engage in physical therapy.  Everything I have been told is true!  It is painful and slow.

All that being said, I anticipate my return to ministry on Sunday, the 26th of January.  I am looking forward to being with all of you for the Annual Parish Meeting and growing together in 2014.  I am so grateful for all your prayers and many cards and calls I have received.  They have meant so much to me!  Being stuck inside for almost three weeks has given me a strong dose of cabin fever and I am eager to get back to work and life.

Please know you have been in my prayers.

God’s Peace,

Fr. Alan

We welcome Rev. Doug Coil back this Sunday, January 19, as our Supply Priest.  We appreciate Fr. Coil being with us again while Fr. Alan is recovering from knee surgery.

Update From Fr. Alan

Greeting all in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

My surgery has been successful and I am now in the early stages of rehab.  As all of you know this is very painful!

I am doing PT three times a week at home through the end of this week.  After that I will continue PT at an out patient facility near my home for an additional 4 weeks.  By that time my knee should be fully functional and my mobility restored.

It is too early to tell when I will be driving again.  I have arranged for supply clergy on the 12th of January hoping I will be with you on the 19th.  If that is pushing it too much I have a priest available for that date.  Surely I will be with you for the Annual Parish Meeting on the 26th!

I want to thank all of you for your prayers and support through this difficult time.  I have received numerous cards and phone calls encouraging a quick recovery and prayers for my healing.  These are so appreiciated by Teresa and I.

I know the Vestry meeting will go well tomorrow night and you will all be in my prayers.

Please let the St. Alban’s family know I am on the mend and look forward to being with you all very soon.

God’s Peace,

Fr. Alan
