Bishop’s Visitation…

On June 26, The Rt. Rev. Don Wimberley, Assisting Bishop of Atlanta, will be with us for Confirmation. I served with Bishop Wimberley in Jacksonville, FL where he was the Dean of the Cathedral. Again our paths crossed when I moved to Versailles, KY, and he was my bishop in the Diocese of Lexington (KY).

He later became the Bishop of Texas (Houston area) and recently came to Atlanta to be closer to his family. I believe he has two daughters who live in the greater Atlanta area, so it was a logical place for him to retire.

Bishop Wimberley assists our Diocesan Bishop, Rob Wright, by doing parish visitation. He has a limited schedule and I am pleased he will be coming to St. Alban’s this year.

This year we have nine parishioners receiving this sacrament:

Matt Hardy
Jen Hardy
Jim Laird
Eric Griffin
John Hart
Caroline Hart
Macklin Lisle
Sydney Reid
Gabriella Reid

Please pray for them as they receive the laying on of hands for empowerment and infilling of the Holy Spirit.

For those above who were baptized as infants or young children, they will be making an adult profession of the Christian faith and taking ownership and personal responsibility before God for their lives.

The adults being confirmed are coming to us from other Christian traditions. They are choosing to join our denomination having received instruction about our liturgy, prayer book, history, policy, sacramental way of worship and much, much more.

This is a very special occasion in the life of our parish and I want to encourage all of you to be present and join us with a reception following the service. Please bring a light snack to share and welcome our bishop and the newly confirmed.

I will be back this Sunday for this wonderful celebration!

God’s Peace,

Fr. Alan

Clergy’s Corner

Did You Know…?

Most of us have heard the following statements at some point in our lives:

1. What goes up must come down (Gravity).

2. For every action there is an equal opposite reaction (Physics).

3. Every equation must balance (Chemistry).

4. 2+2=4 (Mathematics).

These simple truths are what we could call “natural law.” They are properties that enable the disciplines of math and science to engineer planes to fly, ships to float, skyscrapers to stand 100 stories tall. In other words, there are fixed equations that are reliable. They hold true and enable us to do all kinds of wonderful things. In reality, we trust them to remain constant and we really never doubt them.

With that in mind, I am sure you agree that it would be silly to stand on top of the church and say, “I don’t believe in gravity” and then jump off. Obviously, your statement of unbelief has no effect of the reality of gravity. In fact, by jumping off you will simply demonstrate gravity! Natural law is simply present and we understand that.

I make this point to help us understand “spiritual law” in a similar way. Here are four spiritual laws I would like you to consider:

1. Forgive and you will be forgiven.

2. Give and it shall be given unto you.

3. Judge not and you will not be judged.

4. Whatever you sow you will reap.

Just as the natural laws are fixed and reliable so are spiritual laws. These laws are constant and in place and are just as real as the natural laws I mentioned above.

In Galatians 6 we are told:

“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.”

The point is forgiveness. Generosity, sowing, and judgment are just as real as gravity. They are there whether we believe it or not.

Just as we build planes, boats, computers, buildings and automobiles, based on “natural law,” it is also true that we build our spiritual lives based on God’s unchanging “SPIRITUAL LAWS.” That is the way God designed His universe. It is a combination of the natural and the spiritual.

God’s Peace,

Fr. Alan

Bishop’s Blurb

People want straight talk, we hear. Often that means space to say ungracious things about others. I like Paul’s straight talk. He starts with himself. How he did everything he could to destroy the Jesus movement. How he stood idly by while a man was killed by a mob. He did these things for “advancement.” Paul talks straight about his life with God because claiming the truth of all of the chapters of our life glorifies God. Straight talk is confession that fortifies our character, increases gratitude to God for mercy extended and promotes understanding outward towards the entire human family.

FISH4Kids Summer Feeding Program

We are days away from the anticipated last day of school. Most kids are excited about a summer filled with family outings and great adventures, but here in Walton County we have close to 2,300 children who fear school being out due to the challenges of their environment, including having sufficient food.

FISH is gearing up for the 11th year of their FISH4Kids summer feeding project. They ask that we prayerfully consider sponsoring children. For $60, a child will be fed each weekday this summer and receive a hygiene kit.

Please pick up a card from the basket on the round table in the Narthex. Make checks payable to St. Alban’s Episcopal Church and drop it with the completed card in the offering plate or drop it off at the church office. Thank you!

This Sunday, June 5th, will be the last day of our campaign to raise money for this excellent program. If you wish to contribute, please send your sponsorship check in as soon as possible. Thank you!!

Coffee Hour Hosts Needed – Please sign up to host a Coffee Hour on the sheet provided on the counter in the parish hall lobby.
