Banquet

At the center of our worship there’s a table. From the table we serve a common meal. Common because it’s for everybody. Extraordinary because it’s for anybody. Just like God. Jesus loved a good dinner party, I like that about him. From a table he sprang toward the sick with a healing hand. From feasts, he saw rigid religion for the famine it is. At a table, he saw folks wrangling to be exalted and honored. He knows, and so do we, that wrangling and jockeying are ways of saying you’re hungry to feel valued. Come to the banquet. Say you’re hungry. Be fed.

Standing

Jesus’ words and example cause us to stand. He calls to us and our bent over, broken and beleaguered days lose their death grip. His will for us overcomes our weariness. He stands for us and we can stand. We stand up because he stands beside us – in our fear, despair, sins and confusion. For all this, there is one request: That we would comfort others as we have been comforted. That we would share the coordinates of our new freedom. That having been given strength to stand we would lend our strength to another, especially the ones who struggle to stand. Luke 13:10-17

Worthy…

Harvest labor is downward mobility. Down into the foundational things. “Harvest labor” Jesus said, not plantation owning. Down into the fingernail dirty corners of the world. Down into the muck of human relationships.

On our better days, when we set ourselves aside and take Jesus’ invitation to join him as laborers among the unfinished things – the scary silences, the intimidating intersections – those are the days when we best reveal who Jesus is. Those are the days we know that The Cosmic King who takes on flesh to become a day laborer among us is worth every bit of it. All the toil. All the trouble. All of it. He is worthy of it all.

Imagining…

The imaginations of the true laborers belong to God. They have seen God do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine, and so they trust. They trust that God, as the still point of the circle, is drawing the circle of harvest wider and wider and they want in!

Laborers are not sedentary sages. Their work is to search for God’s children in the wilderness of this world’s temptations and to guide them through its confusions so that they may come to know that life in Christ is life abundant. This is worship.
