Agony

Rich never noticed Lazarus’ agony. His sickness. His hunger. Rich was comfortable. He ate well, dressed fine, died and went to Hell. There, Rich finally saw Lazarus. Maybe hell is finally seeing. Maybe hell is being near to God, totally enveloped in love and now, seeing and feeling everything that’s not love…all the missed opportunities to love. Maybe that’s what burns like fire and feels like a pitchfork. Agony! And, it would be agony to watch your family choose selfishness over love, now knowing the consequences My guess is that’s the point of the story, to avoid the agony. Luke 16:19-31

Hurt

Jeremiah is sick with grief. The poor have no advocates. Worse than that, no one cares enough to grieve after them. There is a drought of tears for the poor. The system is rigged in favor of the haves over the have-nots. County budgets are balanced on the backs of the poor. Exploitation!

The politicians stroke the donors and middle-class voters, but are silent about plans to impact the vulnerable. The preachers preach divine kindness and steadfast love, but justice and righteousness don’t make it into the homilies. Jeremiah calls to his people to: feel, empathize, cry for the ruin of human beings. Hurt for the poor. Know God’s heart. Be changed. Jeremiah 8:18-9:1

Refuge

I will never forget it. I was walking around Ground Zero. It was two days after 9/11. The buildings were still on fire. We were passing out water. Socks. Prayers. Anything that would help those who were rummaging around in the rubble for life. I won’t ever forget the smell or how steel beams were twisted like hair bows. Christians, Muslims, Jews – Americans and visitors to this country died that day. Written in the thick dust on the side of a building that served as the morgue, I saw it: “I still believe.” God is a refuge, even then. Psalm 14:6

Out

“Out-called” is who we are in Jesus. “Out-called” from under the crush of the status quo. Out into a life of voluntary partnership with the Spirit. Out, beyond obligation, where joy is.”Out-called” we labor with Jesus in His stated purposes. Called out, we share the responsibility for affecting the world with the effective love of God. We’re out, so we reject the demeaning of any member of the human family. “Out-called” together means our partnership is based on being claimed by Christ for the world. This out-calling is our primary bond, not political affiliation or Constitutional interpretation.Philemon 1:6
