Yuck

Mud and spit caused a man to see. That’s the story. Dirt and spit! Yuck! It’s not hard for me to believe that disgusting things can make miracles. I’ve seen babies born. Seen pain become joy. Watched a cancer diagnosis make marriage vows come alive. Seen grief at the grave become extraordinary alive-ness. And more…. We may not like how bodily God chooses to work God’s thing in the world and in us – we may even be repulsed by God’s process. But one thing is certain, no one is as good with the Yuck as God.

John 9:1-41

Dear St. Alban’s,

Thomas Merton wrote that deep communication is not really communication, but communion. He went on to say it is without words. And I will say it is without time or place, or perhaps, even thought. But I know that deep communion is the deep love that reaches beyond all boundaries of doubt and despair, and, that your love and prayers touched Corby, Suzanne, and me in the most tender and beautiful ways and I am tearfully and joyfully grateful to you all.

Truth

In a city called “falsehood,” Jesus speaks truth. At a deep well, water and truth are both drawn up. Truth and well water both have to be coaxed above ground. Because, truth can live under the ground of fearful convenience and polite euphemisms forever. At this “high noon” conversation with a woman, Jesus draws and serves some truths. First, God is a thirst-quenching God. Second, there is a reality that surpasses ethnicity and belief. Third, God affirms us beyond the sad half-truths we adorn our lives and relationships with. And fourth, that the sure sign of authentic worship is that denial and deceit get drowned.
John 4:5-42

See

You can talk about God, Jesus says, without actually seeing God’s movement. That’s sad. The word “movement” is the best translation of the word “kingdom” in scripture. Movement, like the way Jesus described Spirit. A wind blowing. A wind growing – and causing growth. The temptation here is to think that by thinking a new thought, we’ll get a new life. WRONG. New thoughts are the consequence of new living. Jesus’ friend struggled to get this. The rut of his life had become a grave. Born again is what Jesus prescribed. Born again can happen if we are willing to endure the labor pains.

Temptation

It’s so appealing, temptation. It searches us. It appeals to our secret wants. Our fears. We succumb. Slightly, then chronically. Knowingly or naively. We fall. Sometimes falling gives birth to wisdom, humility and new devotion. Sometimes it just makes more falling. Jesus faced epic temptation. It was all about power. His temptation is ours too. We have immense power. Power to build or break. Power to be self-centered or other-centered. The tempter’s hope was to siphon off Jesus’ power for good. He knew distracted power is diminished power. And diminished power is ultimately surrendered power. Jesus found his way through temptation by remembering his role in God’s story. So must we.
