Covenant

Covenant with God is receiving the benefit of God’s promises. It’s also keeping our promises to God. Our promises to God become flesh when they drive our real-world choices. But faithfulness has a high price, so we attempt a bait and switch. We substitute faithfulness for obsession with heritage, tradition and trimmings. But, God is not fooled! There’s no faithfulness without faith on the ground. Our worship services are hollow unless they birth worshipful lives Monday thru Saturday. Covenant is God keeping God’s promises to us and us choosing God again and again. For us, covenant with God is life.

Deuteronomy 30:15-20

Letter From Rev. Pat Merchant

Dear Friends,

One of the joys for me serving you, is the weekly immersion in the Biblical texts for the week. As you may know, we use a Lectionary (appointed readings each week). This provides us with the readings and collects that are in our worship sheet on Sundays.

Early each week I read through the lessons. As the week progresses, I try to pick which lesson or Psalm to focus my sermon. My spiritual discipline is to hold the idea and then ponder connections.

This week I was pondering last week’s Gospel. You are the Salt and the Light of the God. As beautiful as these metaphors are they require a lot from us. I know about salt. I love salty foods and how the salt is so delicious on potato chips and pretzels. To imagine that I am to serve God by making life more salty for others is a strong demand. I spend a good deal of my time thinking about myself. So on a particular day with salt as my imagine, I will try to smile at others more, write a note to someone I know needs the contact, make a phone call, and or just be more patient at the grocery checkout line.

I pray that we will be the salt and light for each other as we grow in the Spirit.

Yours,

Pat

Status

If you and I are immersed in a love that has no borders, limitations or litmus tests, then we have all we need to go to places that appear loveless. We walk in love so, we can walk into rooms rife with political rancor. We are ambassadors for Christ. And while we may differ on political personalities or policies, our primary citizenship is with the saints in light and so we hold fast to love and do the things that love demands: “We resist evil. We respect the dignity of every human being.” We care for the immigrant, the indigent and the ignorant. For the baptized, the present political climate is but a useful precondition for us to show the world what it means to “walk in love.”

Steady

We hold steady in the face of anxiety and the velocity of life. There’s a three-part recipe for that. It’s 1 part purpose, 1 part differentiation, 1 part spiritual maturity. Jesus’ purpose was to bring glory to God. Everyday, a little more glory for God. He was differentiated too. He knew who he was. He was inner-directed, not outer-directed. He held boldness and gentleness together. He spoke like he was fastened to something unchangeable. Spiritual maturity comes as we actively close the gaps between what we say are our values and how we actually live. Maturity comes by replicating Jesus, not just venerating Him.

Plea

Christmas is a heart-to-heart plea to have a heart. It’s God attempting to reach past our defended hearts, our polite hostility and our convenient ignorance. The news of the baby comes first to the poor people living outdoors because all they had was heart. The news comes first to the sheep and not the corridors of power because power corrodes hearts. Maybe the news of the baby comes to the field first and not the temple because those people had more religion than heart. In Christmas we see God’s heart-to-heart plea to have a heart.

Christmas Heart

Christmas is a heart to heart thing. At Christmas we see God’s heart – God loved the world so much he gave a son. God could have sent an army, but God sent a baby. God knows logic and reason only go so far. If only logic and reason were necessary, there’d be no poverty and no hate. But in Christmas we see God taking a risk. We see God reaching out from God’s heart to the heart of all humanity. We see God keeping God’s heart open to us, even as we reject him and harm one another. God’s open heart is medicine for our broken and frightened hearts. What we all need this coming year is a Christmas heart. In the coming of Jesus among us, my prayer is that the heart that sent him to us would increasingly take over our hearts.
