Faith without Works is Dead – A Thought for Today
In the Epistle of James we have a very brief summation statement that elevates a balance between “faith” (what you believe) and “works” (what you do). James puts this in very simple language:
“4 What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food,16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and be filled,” and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that? 17 Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself.”
To believe Jesus is savior and Lord is only part of the equation. Living as a Christian is the “works” – the evidence – the manifestation that your faith has translated into behavior.
This is equally true of the other extreme. Remember the Pharisees were very “external” and did notable and visible “works” yet Jesus chastised them by saying their hearts and motivations were wrong. They were after the praises of man. They were doing the right things for the wrong reasons.
The point is our behavior, our actions, and our works do matter but are only alive when combined with a true faith.
To have faith without works is dead.
To have works without faith is equally dead.
See you all Sunday.
