Letter From Kristen
Dear Rev. Pat and Saint Alban’s Family,
It has been my honor to serve as the Choirmaster for Saint Alban’s Choir these last two years. During this time, Daniel and I have been greatly impressed with the loving and supportive nature of this church. I am personally honored to have been given the chance to get to know and work with our wonderful choir members. In our time together, the choir has lead worship in a beautiful and powerful way. Our organist, Tom Ayer, has also been a blessing to work with. He has inspired growth in our choir in number, musically, and spiritually. Rev. Pat has been such an incredible mentor to me. It has been an honor learning through her example and her powerful sermons. I feel truly blessed to have the opportunity to work with such an incredible team of leaders.
As many of you know, I enjoy being very involved in our community. In addition to living my passion teaching students in Oconee, I have also continued many of the activities in Monroe that I started while working at GWA, including lessons, community projects, and helping to lead worship at St. Alban’s.
This fall, I was diagnosed with Stage IV Endometriosis. As many of you know, I also have Celiac Disease, which presents its own challenges. Unfortunately, with everything I am currently involved with, I have not had any time to focus on my own health and the necessary treatments and time that will allow me to heal.
Pat, Stan, and Marty presented me with a very generous offer to take an extended leave of absence. However, I am unsure of what is to come in the next few months as Daniel and I work to prioritize my health and our family. We are also hoping to make the move to Oconee County by this Summer so I can be closer to my full- time job.
With all these things in mind, and after much prayer and careful thought, Daniel and I have made the decision not to renew my contract with St. Alban’s this year. This has been an extremely hard decision to make, especially due to the fact that we love you all very dearly. But as of this January, we cannot continue our weekly commitments at St. Alban’s.
Tom Ayer has generously agreed to lead as Choir Master and Organist in the coming weeks. I am very excited about this as he held both positions at his last Parish and I know he will do an excellent job with both the choir and service music.
Daniel and I will come back and visit when we can and St. Alban’s will always hold a very special place in our hearts. I hope that St. Alban’s Choir will continue to grow and thrive under new direction. Thank you for your love and support these last two years. We covet your thoughts and prayers during this time.
Kristen and Daniel Donaldson
In Kristin’s letter to the parish, you have received the news of her resignation. I was very sad to hear of her illness and of her leaving us. Her many gifts to us of her leadership of the choir, her beautiful voice, and her sheer joy in life have been a light in our life together. I hope that you will thank her and Daniel for their presence and ministry with us, and that you keep them in your prayers in the future.
As we move into Epiphany we are grateful for the talents of Tom Ayer as our new organist and choirmaster. Music is at the core of our worship. It transports us into the mystery of our experience of, and our love for God. Music is the language of the ear and of the heart.
This Sunday we will celebrate together our time with Kristen and Daniel and send them forth on their new journey.
Happy New Year! Let’s keep three words in front of us this year, “Loving like Jesus.” Loving like Jesus… as I read and watch the news is as timely as ever. Jesus loves by telling stories that make us free. He loves by being humbly bold, by breaking bread with unusual dining partners, by putting his reputation on the line for outcasts. He loves by reminding us that God is lively, effective and trustworthy. My hope and prayer for the Diocese of Atlanta in 2018 is that we might be a half-step more courageous. A half-step more faithful. A half-step more loving as Jesus loved.
God bless you!
