Shrove Tuesday 2016

Shrove Tuesday has become the last day of celebration and feasting before the Lenten season.

The name “Shrove Tuesday” is derived from the word “shrive”, which means to confess and receive absolution. The name denotes a period of cleansing, wherein a person brings their lusts and appetites under subjection through abstention and self-sacrifice.

The concept behind this practice is found in 1 Corinthians 9:27, where the Apostle Paul states: “I buffet my body and make it my slave…” Ironically, Shrove Tuesday has evolved into a day of frivolity and indulgence, during which people participate in as much pleasure and self-gratification as they can before Lent begins. On February 9, 2016, St. Alban’s observed Shrove Tuesday with sausage, bacon and, of course, pancakes!  Pictures are below.

Sue Henson

Dear Parishioners:

I am writing to let you know that Sue Henson passed away earlier this morning.  I was at the house just after she passed and ministered the Episcopal Liturgy for “Ministry at Time of Death.”

I will be meeting with her daughters this afternoon and as soon as the funeral arrangements are decided, we will let you know.

I also had a special prayer time with Charles who is deeply grieving the loss of his wife.

God’s Peace,
Fr. Alan
